- The Scholarship shall be known as Te Karahipi Whakamaumaharatanga ki a Brian Simpson (The Brian Simpson Memorial Scholarship).
- Up to two Scholarships may be awarded annually, each for a period of one year, up to a total value of $2,500.00. Where two scholarships are awarded, each recipient will receive $1250.00.
- To be eligible for the Scholarship applicants must:
- Have confirmed enrolment at Te Kura o Tipene.
- Be a descendant of the Iwi of Mataatua waka.
- Normally live in the rohe of Mataatua waka.
- Financial need confirmed by guardian/parent.
- Have Academic and or Sporting Potential.
4. The Scholarship Committee will consider the following factors when selecting recipients:
- Financial Need: Confirmed by guardian/parent.
- Academic Merit: All applicant’s must provide their most recent school reports, any standardised test results and a letter of support from the applicant’s school (written statement and documents submitted online).
- Sporting Merit: Letters of support from sports coaches – school, clubs and associations.
- Character and Leadership: Evidence of good character, leadership qualities, and involvement in sporting/community/hapū/Iwi/school activities (written statement and 5 – 10 minute video made by applicant submitted online. If available, letters of support from sports coaches, cultural tutors, and or community leaders).
- Commitment to te ao Māori, te reo me ōna tikanga: (written statement and 5 – 10 minute video made by applicant submitted online).
- Potential to Benefit from Te Kura o Tipene: Potential to thrive and contribute to Te Kura o Tipene (written statement and 5 – 10 minute video made by applicant submitted online).
5. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Simpson Whānau on the recommendation of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will include a descendant of Brian Simpson, the Chair of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Tipene Old Boys Committee (or nominee), and a kaumātua of Mataatua descent.
6. The Scholarship will be paid in one instalment upon award directly to Te Kura o Tipene. The Scholarship will be credited to the student’s fees.
7. The Scholarship may be held concurrently with any other scholarship/award/grant if the regulations for that scholarship/award/grant permit and the Selection Committee is informed and approves. It is the responsibility of the applicant to declare to the Selection Committee all other scholarships, awards or grant funding received while also receiving this Scholarship.
8. The Simpson Whānau is not obliged to make an award if no applicant/s meet the criteria and/or are of insufficient merit.
9. Payments under the terms of this Scholarship/s remain tax-free, provided the Scholarship/s pay costs associated with the applicant’s educational needs (see 6. above and Note I).
10. The Simpson Whānau can amend or vary these Regulations if there is no departure from the main purpose of the Scholarship.

Notes
I. The tax-free status of this Scholarship is under current legislation. The Simpson Whānau cannot guarantee this tax-free outcome.
II. In making a recommendation for this scholarship the Selection Committee shall consider other scholarships, bursaries and awards held by the applicants, with a view to achieving a fair distribution of monies among applicants.
III. Verification of Eligibility: Applicants provide their pēpeha, whakapapa to Mataatua, residency within te rohe o Mataatua, and proven financial need.
IV. Supporting documents submitted online and must include a letter of support from the applicants’ current school and recent school reports. Any letters of support from any sports coaches, cultural tutors, and or community leaders will be considered.
V. One 5 – 10 minute video made and submitted by the applicant covering their Character and Leadership, Commitment to te Ao Māori, te reo me ōna tikanga, and Potential to Benefit from attending Te Kura o Tipene.
VI. Scholarship Agreement: Successful applicants will sign a scholarship agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the award.
VII. Successful applicants will comply with the Scholarship Regulations and must notify the Selection Committee of any change in their enrolment or funding status. The Simpson Whānau may terminate the Scholarship/s, if it is established that the successful applicant is not complying with these regulations.

- The Simpson Whānau will award the scholarship/s on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
